Years after her best friend was murdered, Lucy, long suspected by her Texas hometown though never charged, has built a quiet new life. When a hit true-crime podcast reopens the case, she is pulled back home, unsure herself of what happened that night. Amy Tintera's thriller alternates with...
Lucy Chase fled her Texas hometown under a cloud: her best friend was murdered, Lucy was found wandering covered in blood, and though never charged, she was tried and convicted by everyone she knew. Amy Tintera's sharp, propulsive thriller catches up with her years later, when a chart-topping true-crime podcast drags the case - and Lucy - back into the light, forcing her to confront a night she genuinely cannot fully remember. Tintera threads the narrative with podcast transcripts, satirizing the true-crime industry even as she exploits its momentum, and gives Lucy a bracingly funny, defensive voice that keeps sympathy and suspicion in constant tension. The result is a whodunit that doubles as a comedy of small-town judgment and a romance, without letting either dilute the mystery. For readers who like their suspense witty, fast and modern, it is enormously entertaining - a page-turner smart enough to mock the very genre it perfects.
