A desperate young woman with a criminal record talks her way into a live-in maid's job for a glamorous suburban couple, and climbs the stairs to a tiny attic room whose door locks only from the outside. Freida McFadden's runaway thriller weaponizes that setup for maximum unease, doling out short, cliff-edged chapters and shifting perspectives to keep the reader perpetually off-balance about who is preying on whom. It makes no claim to literary grandeur; its ambitions are pure velocity and misdirection, and on those terms it is ruthlessly effective, engineered around the kind of mid-book turn that launched a thousand online recommendations. McFadden understands exactly what a certain reader wants - momentum, twists, a sense of vertiginous control shifting hands - and delivers it without padding. For anyone seeking a fast, twisty, gulp-it-in-a-sitting thriller, this is the book that came to define the recent wave, and a genuine publishing phenomenon.
