For years the public consumed Britney Spears as spectacle; The Woman in Me is her chance to narrate her own life, and the reclamation is the point. Written after the end of the conservatorship that controlled her for thirteen years, the memoir moves from a Louisiana childhood to global superstardom to the slow horror of losing autonomy over her body, money and voice. It is not a literary performance and does not try to be; its power lies in directness, in a famous woman finally saying what happened. intendle recommends it as a landmark document of the #FreeBritney era and of how the media and her own family failed her. It sold more than a million US copies in its first week and won a Goodreads Choice Award. Brief, blunt and quietly furious, it turns a tabloid fixture back into a person.
