Returning to the sprawling universe of her Hugo- and Nebula-winning Ancillary Justice, Ann Leckie tells a quieter, more intimate story in Translation State, braiding three lives: Enae, a sheltered bureaucrat handed a decades-cold missing-person case; Reet, a foundling who suspects he may not be entirely human; and Qven, being raised to become a Presger Translator, a bridge to a terrifyingly alien power.
Their converging paths turn the novel into a searching exploration of identity, autonomy and what it means to belong to a category - species, gender, family - that others assign to you.
Leckie's science fiction has always used its aliens and empires to interrogate personhood, and here she does so with warmth and wit as well as rigor, her signature attention to gender and consciousness fully present. It works both as a standalone and as a gift to longtime readers.
For those who like their space opera thoughtful and character-driven rather than explosive, it is a rich, humane addition to one of modern SF's most admired universes.
