Four women recruited in the 1970s have spent four decades quietly killing bad men for a shadowy organization - and now, on the cusp of retirement, they discover that the same organization wants them gone.
Deanna Raybourn's brisk, gleeful thriller sends its sexagenarian assassins into a fight for survival that doubles as a comedy about the peculiar superpower of being an older woman: utterly lethal, and completely overlooked.
Raybourn alternates a propulsive present-day chase with flashbacks to the women's earliest missions, building camaraderie and backstory without slowing the action, and she clearly relishes letting her heroines weaponize the world's tendency to dismiss them. It never pretends to be more than expertly made entertainment, but on that level it is a delight - witty, action-packed and warmly female-centered.
For readers who want a thriller that is pure fun with a feminist wink, these are exactly the killers to spend a few hundred pages with.
